Fall Classes begin August 12, 2019!

Class Descriptions

Ballet is often described as the foundation of all other forms of dance. This style of dance teaches proper posture, technique, control, and balance that will carry over into other forms of dance and even the dancer’s daily life. Ballet is graceful and often tells a story throughout an evening’s performance.  Ballet has a large vocabulary of movement and names for those movements.  Students in this class will also learn a little French and Italian!

Jazz uses ballet terminology and movements to create fun and exciting choreography.  Much of the dance in movies and on television is jazz.  Jazz has grown and changed throughout the years just like jazz music has.  The music used in this class will be fun and upbeat, typically age appropriate pop music.

Hip Hop became widely known in the 70s when popping, locking, and breaking crews formed.  Hip Hop today incorporates many of old and new urban dance styles and has become incredibly popular.  All music used and movements taught in this class is will be age appropriate.  Please do not wear street shoes to this class.  Tennis shoes are suggested, but they must be exclusively used for dance class.

Modern Dance was created in the early 20th century when dancers began to reject the rigidity of ballet.  The primary focus at the time was self expression, where ballet’s focus was primarily on technical skill.  It is often focused on expressing emotions, but not exclusively.  Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, and Isadora Duncan are just a few of Modern dance’s many pioneers.

Lyrical dance is all about the music. Lyrical dance combines ballet and jazz to express the mood and emotion in the music.  Ballet training is highly recommended to participate in this class as it is the backbone of the style.

Our Musical Theater class combines dance and acting to prepare dancers for what might be demanded of them in a musical stage performance.  Many styles of dance will be used

Creative Movement is a class for our young dancers, typically 3 to 4 years of age.  In this class we will focus on rhythm, levels (high, medium, and low), directions, coordination, and especially creativity in movement.  This class is designed to encourage dancers to begin expressing themselves through dance and understand the principles of how dancers behave in dance class.

Our Special Needs class is designed for dancers who have special needs and are typically excluded from dance classes.  We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy dance!  Dancers in this class will focus primarily on ballet and jazz.

Zumba is an hour long, high energy, easy to follow, Latin-dance inspired, group fitness class that will wear you out and leave you smiling!  There are two rules in my Zumba class: You have to have fun and you have to get sweaty.  Absolutely anyone regardless of physical fitness can do Zumba, but remember this is a class for the grown-ups!

  1. Zumba on Saturday YEAH!!

  2. How much do you charge for your Zumba classes??

    • Whoa! Can’t believe I just now saw your question Carrie! Your first class is free and after that they’re $5. So sorry for the months long delay!!!

  3. Wendy Benjamin

Hey, Ms. Valerie! I hope you’re enjoying some much needed rest. I forgot to stick around last Saturday and get an order form for the 2014 Recital video. Is there any way I can still order that DVD???

  4. Hi, I was wondering what it the youngest age you start for ballet?

    • Our Creative Movement class covers some ballet terms and movement and is for dancers ages 3-5. The next age group up is a ballet/jazz combo class (ballet the first half of class, jazz the second) and it is for dancers ages 5-7.

  5. Jamie Bagwell

What ages are included in your special needs classes?

    • This class is on hiatus for the summer, but the dancer in our Special Needs class is in the 10-12yr range.

  6. Jamie Bagwell

    Ok. Thank you.

  7. Hello how much are your creative movement classes and also what days and times ?

    • Hi! The Creative Movement classes are currently $43 per month and are on Thursdays from 4-4:45pm or Saturday mornings from 11-11:45.

  8. Hello. I was wondering how much you are currently charging for the hip hop class and when is it held? Does it extend to the 5 year old age group?

    • Hi Emily! Our hip hop classes begin at age 8. The Beginner class is on Mondays from 4-4:45pm and it’s $43 per month if you only take hip hop. For 5-7 year olds, we offer an Intro to Ballet/Jazz class that’s on Thursdays from 4:45-5:45 and it’s $48 per month. We also offer a tap class for the 5-7 age group on Thursdays from 5:45-6:30.

  9. How big are your hip hop classes? And what is the age range per class? And I’m sorry but I didn’t see when classes start? Where are recitals held? Thanks

    • Riversong Dance Studio

Hey there! The cap on most of our classes is at 12ish, but we usually have around 6-9 in each class. The beginner class recommended age range is 8-11ish, intermediate is 10-14ish, and advanced is 13 and up. Classes begin on August 18 and we have our recital each year at South Doyle High School. 🙂

  10. I was interested in the Creative Movements class for my daughter and I saw that it’s $43/mo but was curious how long the class runs for. Also, I know other studios have recitals that are required with other fees involved so I was curious if you have anything like that that we need to know about?
