Ballet is often described as the foundation of all other forms of dance. This style of dance teaches proper posture, technique, control, and balance that will carry over into other forms of dance and even the dancer’s daily life. Ballet is graceful and often tells a story throughout an evening’s performance. Ballet has a large vocabulary of movement and names for those movements. Students in this class will also learn a little French and Italian!
Jazz uses ballet terminology and movements to create fun and exciting choreography. Much of the dance in movies and on television is jazz. Jazz has grown and changed throughout the years just like jazz music has. The music used in this class will be fun and upbeat, typically age appropriate pop music.
Hip Hop became widely known in the 70s when popping, locking, and breaking crews formed. Hip Hop today incorporates many of old and new urban dance styles and has become incredibly popular. All music used and movements taught in this class is will be age appropriate. Please do not wear street shoes to this class. Tennis shoes are suggested, but they must be exclusively used for dance class.
Modern Dance was created in the early 20th century when dancers began to reject the rigidity of ballet. The primary focus at the time was self expression, where ballet’s focus was primarily on technical skill. It is often focused on expressing emotions, but not exclusively. Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, and Isadora Duncan are just a few of Modern dance’s many pioneers.
Lyrical dance is all about the music. Lyrical dance combines ballet and jazz to express the mood and emotion in the music. Ballet training is highly recommended to participate in this class as it is the backbone of the style.
Our Musical Theater class combines dance and acting to prepare dancers for what might be demanded of them in a musical stage performance. Many styles of dance will be used
Creative Movement is a class for our young dancers, typically 3 to 4 years of age. In this class we will focus on rhythm, levels (high, medium, and low), directions, coordination, and especially creativity in movement. This class is designed to encourage dancers to begin expressing themselves through dance and understand the principles of how dancers behave in dance class.
Our Special Needs class is designed for dancers who have special needs and are typically excluded from dance classes. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy dance! Dancers in this class will focus primarily on ballet and jazz.
Zumba is an hour long, high energy, easy to follow, Latin-dance inspired, group fitness class that will wear you out and leave you smiling! There are two rules in my Zumba class: You have to have fun and you have to get sweaty. Absolutely anyone regardless of physical fitness can do Zumba, but remember this is a class for the grown-ups!
